Episode 1: A Levels and Beyond

Some of you will remember these events. Some will be able to relate to them. Some will only be able to enjoy. This is the pilot episode of the reminiscences of my university life. Each audio episode will be accompanied by a transcription, wherein I will try my best to retain the expression of the original Urdu version, however as is obvious, there is only so much accuracy that a translation can attain.

Permit me to regale you...

"This is about those times when I used to study in university. Or you can say this is about those times when I used to be found in the university from 9 am to 5 pm, 5 days a week. In fact, in the beginning, 6 days a week would be spent in the university because nust had built a new campus in Islamabad, which could not be completed on time. Therefore the university opened with a delay of several months, the penalty for which we paid by attending classes on Saturdays for a long time. Later we came to know that hardly anything got done on time in nust. But back then, nust’s international ranking was 376 and the distance from my house was only a few kilometres, therefore at that juncture of life, I, like any other young student of that age, thanked God for my admission and began to eagerly await the commencement of my engineering degree. Then for the next several years, I eagerly awaited the end of the same, but that’s for another time."

Letter to Rector Nust

If NUST gave as much value to its principles as it does to its principals, it could actually be a half decent university. In an ideal world, that is what would happen. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world. The following is one such example from back when I was applying for my degree and transcripts. This email was sent to Rector Nust:

Dear Sir,

The following are some facts:

I completed my degree of Electrical Engineering from SEECS in June 2014. On 25th August 2014, I applied for my degree and transcripts (to be delivered by post). The official time mentioned for the preparation of transcripts is minimum 14 days for normal fee (Rs 500) and 7 days for urgent fee (Rs 1000). I therefore deposited Rs 1000 to have my transcripts prepared on an urgent basis because I had already been successful in securing employment in a major group of companies of the country, pending the submission of my original transcripts. My soon-to-be employers in Lahore asked me how long would it take me to submit my transcripts and I told them 2 weeks. Do you know why I lied? It was because I have had the unpleasant experience of getting the transcripts made for my graduating friends in the past. Never have I seen the NUST authorities honor their word regarding the deadlines in the case of transcripts. Therefore the date I gave my employers was 7 days LATER than what NUST promised me. I was under the impression that perhaps as usual, the delay caused would be merely twice as long as the promised time period. I was mistaken.

Dat beard.
Ladies and gentlemen. Today I will once again share a few facts about my friend, dear old Saad bin Khalid - TM, where TM does not refer to "trademark" although it is a trademark nickname for him. At this point, if you haven't already been introduced to SBK, you may want to take a look here, otherwise carry on:

Cricket Records

I like how everything is a record in cricket. Just about anything you do gets you a mention (no matter how mundane) in the annals of that year, etched forever in history for all times to come. We have seen maximum runs in an ODI, maximum runs in a test match, maximum score in a t20 match. Maximum number of wickets taken in a match. Most wickets taken in a row. Most extras given in a match. Then we've seen longest partnership. Longest partnership of openers. Highest partnership of third wicket. Highest partnership of tail enders. We have seen location specific records. Maximum runs scored in a particular cricket ground etc etc. Ok, fair enough.

Letter to My Godson

Dear Mohammad,

As I begin writing, I realize (as you will too, with time) that I could easily write a book instead of a letter, but that not being a feasible option at the moment, a letter will suffice. If you could turn back time and visit the past at some point in 1994, you would see two five year old boys in a school yard. One of them was wearing a cap to cover his shaved head. The other took it off and tossed it away. This caused the cap wearer to get into a tussle with the cap tosser. Pinned to the ground, the former made the latter apologize by saying “Sorry bolo” followed by “Ainda karo gay?” Upon getting up however, and going a safe distance away, the cap tosser said defiantly: “Karoonga!” That defiant little boy was your father and the child seething with anger was your godfather.

You are walking around in seecs. You see a bearded bespectacled figure wearing his student card around his neck, possibly accompanied by a DSLR in his hand surrounded by a bunch of juniors, ladies, or junior ladies. Who is it? It's Saad bin Khalid.

You are in a society of seecs. You are organizing your things, doing your duties, minding your own business, bothering nobody. In the middle of an event, you see a person who isn’t an official member but is in the thick of things, poking his nose everywhere. Who is it? Saad bin Khalid.

Bullying in NUST

This article isn’t meant to disrespect anyone; I just want to express my general opinion towards the majority of seniors in NUST who think they own the place. An event of the past compelled me to pen my thoughts over this issue. So, me and my friends were merrily indulged in a healthy game of football, we were having fun and there seemed to be no sign of anger. Then one false move by a senior, with whom we were playing, sparked a fire that ended with us abandoning the ground. It was clearly the senior’s mistake and it wasn’t as if we were shouting at him but this guy obviously didn’t want to accept his mistakes in front of a freshie, so he started asserting the fact that he was four years older than us and this granted him absolute authority over what is right and wrong. Harsh words were uttered by him and seeing his mood and realizing the fact that he may bring his bigger buddies and create a scene, we decided to leave him alone.
