Letter to My Godson

Dear Mohammad,

As I begin writing, I realize (as you will too, with time) that I could easily write a book instead of a letter, but that not being a feasible option at the moment, a letter will suffice. If you could turn back time and visit the past at some point in 1994, you would see two five year old boys in a school yard. One of them was wearing a cap to cover his shaved head. The other took it off and tossed it away. This caused the cap wearer to get into a tussle with the cap tosser. Pinned to the ground, the former made the latter apologize by saying “Sorry bolo” followed by “Ainda karo gay?” Upon getting up however, and going a safe distance away, the cap tosser said defiantly: “Karoonga!” That defiant little boy was your father and the child seething with anger was your godfather.

Rustam and Sohrab

Who wants Game of Thrones when real life history has such excellent legends in itself? Great dialogues that changed the world in olden times by warriors, kings and wise men alike. Tales devoted to the mighty men of the past, all dead now. Battles fought centuries ago, acts of valor performed by great fighters, all forgotten now.

The story of Rustam and Sohrab is one of those tales portraying the Persian culture and ancient warfare.

It is said that the great Persian warrior Rustam entered the kingdom of a man named Turan at the time of the Persian Empire when Islam was newly expanding and when the sun was about to set on the Roman Empire. He was searching for his steed. He remained a welcome guest of the King until he fell in love with his daughter Tahmina that is and married her. King Turan exiled him in his wrath. Rustam bestowed a necklace to his beloved wife before departing so that she could remember him, vowing to come back but never knowing his unborn son.

The Juggat

Seriously kids these days. I mean how could anyone use abusive words and think they're cool. That's absurd. Stupid. Idiotic. Immature. You think you look cool but you don't. You disgust us. True, nobody will give a crap about my opinion but honestly I speak on behalf of all the 80's and 90's generation.

In school, in almost every class there is this one kid renowned for his ''juggats''. We all know what these ''juggats'' are. Describing obscene scenarios involving one's siblings (usually a sister) or parents (usually the mother) or both. Doubtless juggats involve these vulgarities but on a much smaller scale. The word juggat actually means using a physical feature of one person to compare him/her with an object, place, another person and often animals. For example,''Rambay kay dastay warga moon hai tera.''

I can never forget my first night in the hostel. I cried a lot, my parents weren't here to drop me to NUST. I felt bewildered in this new place. I was excited for sure, and I sure wanted to be here! And now I can’t forget the last of my days at NUST. I saw you all leave.

I go into my bathroom and from the mirror I peek into the lights of the room in front of mine. That room once belonged to Azeema, my intelligent neighbour. Seeing those lights from my bathroom mirror in last 4 years made me learn your routine :P Now I look into those lights and know that someone else has taken your room, I have tears in my eyes :'(

Then Mahwish! The one who was with me through and through in academics :P
As soon as you left that room, a scary MS/PhD student has replaced you. Whenever I pass by or see her face anywhere in the cafes or corridors, I scream inside, how could this happen to me? How could I have such elderly fat ugly women as my neighbours with no fun in life :'(

Style Over Substance

“So what will you wear at the convocation ceremony?” asked my friend.

“The blue dress I recently got stitched.”

“But that’s a lawn suit. You can’t wear that. If it has to be lawn then get a designer lawn at least. You will feel confident when you are dressed well. Change the dress.” she added hastily.

I ignored her advice. But when my aunt came up with somewhat similar advice; that my dress should be comparable to my expensive degree; I grew a little perplexed. Was it really true that I needed a better dress to help me lift my electrical engineering degree?
